A little more detail:

A luteinizing hormone (LH) test measures the level of LH, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a crucial role in regulating the reproductive system in both men and women. In women, LH is vital for ovulation, as it triggers the release of an egg from the ovary. It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle and the production of other hormones like estrogen and progesterone. In men, LH stimulates the production of testosterone from the testes, which is essential for sperm production and maintaining male secondary sexual characteristics.

The LH test is commonly used to evaluate fertility issues, diagnose menstrual irregularities, and assess conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. Elevated LH levels may indicate conditions such as menopause, ovarian failure, or certain pituitary disorders. In men, high LH levels could suggest testicular dysfunction or primary hypogonadism.

The test typically involves a blood sample, often taken on specific days of a woman’s menstrual cycle for accurate assessment. LH levels fluctuate throughout the cycle, making timing important for interpretation. By measuring LH alongside other hormones like follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) or estrogen, healthcare providers can gain insights into reproductive health, guiding diagnosis and treatment options.
