A little more detail:

The Hepatitis B core test is a blood test that detects antibodies to the hepatitis B virus (HBV), specifically focusing on the core antigen (HBcAg) and the corresponding antibodies (anti-HBc). This test is crucial for diagnosing and managing hepatitis B infections, as it provides valuable information about a person’s current or past exposure to the virus.

Key components of the Hepatitis B core test include:

  1. HBcAg: This antigen indicates the presence of the virus in the liver and signifies an active infection. However, HBcAg is not typically measured in routine testing; rather, its detection is inferred from antibody testing.
  2. Anti-HBc (IgM and IgG): This antibody can indicate a past or present infection. The presence of IgM anti-HBc suggests a recent infection, while IgG anti-HBc indicates a past infection or chronic hepatitis B.
  3. Interpretation: A positive anti-HBc result, particularly in the absence of HBsAg (the surface antigen), may suggest that a person has recovered from a past infection or has a chronic infection.

The Hepatitis B core test is often used in conjunction with other hepatitis B tests, such as the HBsAg and anti-HBs tests, to provide a comprehensive understanding of a person’s hepatitis B status. Regular testing is essential for individuals at risk for HBV infection, such as those with unprotected sex or sharing needles. Early detection helps guide appropriate treatment and management strategies.
